Setting Up Flickr Galleries in Octopress
During the last few years, I’ve picked up photography as one of my pastime activities.
Up until recently, I was using Jekyll with a gallery gem to manage my galleries online, for my family and friends.
However, as flickr recently changed their service, by upgrading all users to 1Tb free space, as well as improving the design and functionality a lot, I decided to move all of my public galleries to flickr.
Why use flickr instead of pure jekyll/octopress?
There are some clear advantages to hosting the imagery yourself, including full control over all images, and not having to bother with flickr’s API’s.
However, I saw these advantages:
- flickr provides an excellent categorizing tool, allowing for collections/sets, tagging etc.
- You don’t need a seperate copy of the images locally, just for octopress. In my case, I shoot exclusively in RAW, and generate 3000x2000 px. images for web. That quickly takes up space
- flickr is probably better / faster at serving images than my own server.
- Yet another (free) off-site backup option is sweet.
There are other jekyll/octopress plugins out there
Mugge did a great Octopress implementation for simplifying flickr integration into Octopress, available here: https://github.com/neilk/octopress-flickr. This allows you to insert a single Liquid tag on a jekyll/octopress page, and it will show a set or a photo based on the properties you set.
However, as I wanted more control over how the implementation is handled, I started out by forking his repo, and eventually ended up creating somewhat of a hybrid between Neil’s idea and a page generator.
The main challenge
The main reason for creating my own jekyll/octopress Generator is, as mentioned previously, that I wanted more control over the HTML generated for a set.
Also, I wanted to generate a complete gallery, containing all my flickr sets in one single inde page, instead of having to set up single pages myself, containing the sets individually.
Previously I used jekyll https://github.com/ggreer/jekyll-gallery-generator, which does this, so I basically wanted the same approach, only using the images through flickr’s API instead of having them locally.
My approach consists of the following setup:
- A template file for an index of all sets / galleries for a given user
- A template file for the actual set you’re browsing
- A few helper functions, based on Neil’s work and the excellent flickraw gem for handling interaction with the API
- The generator plugin itself
Introducing octopress-flickr-generator
I’ve just pushed the octopress-flickr-generator project to GitHub, so I’m not going to go into specifics about the generator, however it does the following:
- Allows for generating an index of all, public sets of a flickr user
- Creates a “gallery” page for each set, using simple Liquid templates, which allows for logic
- It applies a specific sorting method, allowing for grouping of sets in collections.
Anyway, you can read more about it at the official GitHub repo
You can see a demo of it running here at our own photo site
Yes, that’s me jumping around in a suit. Yes, I drank alcohol. No, you probably don’t understand the labels in danish. Yes, my language has funny letters.

Portrait photography
I'll blog about this course and the photoshoot once I get to it
I'll blog about this course and the photoshoot once I get to it. I'm still editing the images and seeing what I like best. I tackled many projects at the end this year and I need a creative break for at least a week before I can start blogging. It was my goal to have my portfolio up and running before the new year so that's why I'm submitting this lesson homework right now. 3. I retouched one image, the same as last homework, I just keep coming back to it because it's becoming my favorite. I like having a few versions perhaps one more edgy and creative. This one here is the more creative version. I used the warp tool to make parts of the image appear doubled. Thank you Jingna for creating this course and putting in your time and effort so others like myself can benefit from it. I learned a lot and it pushed me in the right direction. I also have no doubt I'll come back to some parts of this course to refresh. You'll continue to be an inspiration to me, I look forward to seeing all your new work in 2018. Thank you again!
And yet there is something incredibly uplifting about all that creative energy gathered from every corner of the world. It reminds me that the photography world is, in a very real sense, a community. And of course, along the way, we see some great pictures. I’ve seen a lot of photographs at this point in my career. But there is nothing like that chill down the back of your neck when you see something special.
This can be quickly corrected though with your camera's Exposure Compensation controls. To begin with, try dialling in up to +1 stop of positive Exposure Compensation to lighten up people's faces. Review your shots, and if you feel you they need to be lightened further, increase this further.
Most often a prime lens will be used, both because the zoom is not necessary for posed shots (and primes are lighter, cheaper, faster, and higher quality), and because zoom lenses can introduce highly unflattering geometric distortion (barrel distortion or pincushion distortion). However, zoom lenses may be used, particularly in candid shots or to encourage creative framing.
Mr. Low Notes 1 year ago Thanks for the reply Jill! That means a lot. Sorry if I came off seeming like a jerk. I'm really not. Chopped heads are my pet peeve. ;-) Anyway, I missed the part about the way that particular photo (busy background) is framed as being an example of what Not To Do. My bad. Like you alluded to, Certain parts of photography are subjective. Just like taste in music. My wife has gotten interested in photography. I showed her this article and told it contains some very good info. So again, good work overall! :-) MLN Reply Quote
LC: In the same essay, you discuss the importance of “pictus interruptus” in Eggleston’s work—the way his sequences build up rich, non-linear possibilities over a series of images. Because portraiture is so intimately tied to single images (going back to its roots in painting), the idea of a portrait “series” can be a bit intimidating. Any thoughts or advice on this matter for portrait-inclined photographers?
Today, the radical act is not to hit the road and travel—but rather to stay put and lay down roots. An English photographer shares 13 years of careful, deliberate meditations on his surrounding landscapes.

Wow, I thought I was pretty good at taking portraits that make the subject pop out, but these are just amazing. I will definitely try to employ these tips in future photography. Thanks, I will order a copy of this E-Book the second I get the money. Thanks again.
If the model's face is slightly side-on to the camera, a wide aperture may blur one of the eyes. This can look a little strange, so consider stopping down to f/5.6 to keep both eyes sharp
In situations where the available lighting makes it impossible to attain a pleasing white balance, converting to black-and-white is a viable option that also imbues a portrait with a sense of classic refinement. “There is something timeless about a black-and-white portrait,” says Smith. “It eliminates the distraction of color and puts all the emphasis on the subject.” Smith prefers to shoot his portraits in raw and convert to black-and-white in post, but notes, “one of the handy features of Sony’s a7 series mirrorless cameras is the ability to apply a Black & White creative style. This allows you to view the black-and-white scene in real-time as you shoot.” He points out that, “while the B&W tonality is baked into the JPEGs shot in this mode, your raw files are not affected, which allows you to convert them to your taste in post.”
People tend to forget that a portrait without a REAL expression does not connect to the viewer. Humankind wants to see genuine emotion and not a posed, cheesy smile. This is more important than location, light and expensive gear. Clients will more often than not choose the blurry images with bad compositions if it means those images are honest portrayals of themselves.

It is scientifically proven that the eye is most attracted to four different points of an image. Sticking with these four points will help frame the subject in the most pleasing manner. Further, when taking photographs, it goes without say that the images produced will be 2-dimensional. To make it look 3-dimensional and to make the subject pop out of the frame, there must be depth in the composition. An image’s foreground, middle ground and background are essential in achieving the necessary depth. This article on bokeh discusses this concept in depth.
phazeless July 30, 2008 01:16 am Good tips, but what you didn't tell them was most of these portraits were taken with extremely good optics and very well processed, a couple I suspected even were HDRs. Regardless, thanks for the tips.

Also called a main light, the key light is usually placed to one side of the subject's face, between 30 and 60 degrees off center and a bit higher than eye level. The purpose of the Key-Light is to give shape (modelling) to a subject, typically a face. This relies on the first principle of lighting, white comes out of a plane and black goes back into a plane. The depth of shadow created by the Main-Light can be controlled with a Fill-Light.
Choosing the proper focal length is very important
Choosing the proper focal length is very important. The focal length has the potential to distort the subject’s head in one way or another. The longer the focal lengths, the more flattering it is for the subject and the shallower the DOF will be. Personally, I find that the 85mm on a full frame camera and the 50mm on a cropped sensor to be the optimal portrait lengths. Both are wide enough to capture the surrounding scenery with the appropriate distance and also with a few steps forward, they can achieve tighter portraits. Fixed prime lenses such as the 50mm or 85mm are fast lenses with wide apertures that will help shoot at wide settings. This is important when you want to melt away distracting backgrounds. My latest article expounds in great length on this point.
Modern senior portraits may include virtually any pose or clothing choice, within the limits of good taste. Students often appear with pets, student athletes of both sexes pose in letterman jackets or their playing uniforms, while many men choose glamour photography. Outdoor "location" photos continue to increase in popularity, as well as locations that are of specific importance to the senior, both replacing studio portraits. Picture proofs are usually available to view online the next day which are lower quality, unedited and often with a watermark of the studio.
Thanks for the emphasis on creating creative photos, D! These days, it's rather difficult to find photographers who are like-minded. Who thinks it is in creating the shots that makes the photos, not necessarily the post-production. Or are we the "endangered species"?
I am equally passionate about historical research
I am equally passionate about historical research. History is full of puzzles, and I love trying to decode the thoughts of people I never met. Discovering what Darwin was thinking even when he never explained, piecing together the process that led Eadweard Muybridge to design his shutters a certain way—it brings those histories alive for me. The biggest challenge is to avoid personalizing things too much, to maintain critical distance, and it’s not always easy. When I found the letters Man Ray wrote to Lee Miller, for example, I cried. He loved her deeply, but she left him. The letters he wrote right afterwards sizzle with emotion. There is so much raw life in them, so much pain, anguish, desperation. I never met him, but reading those letters, it didn’t really matter.
Are you coming in close for a headshot or beauty portrait or does your subject want an environmental portrait that conveys a sense of what they do or where they live? Each of these vantage points requires a different approach. Keep in mind that whatever is closest to the camera will appear largest in an image and that wide-angle lenses will amplify this effect. When shooting a close-up portrait, facial features such as a pronounced nose can be particularly challenging, requiring special attention.
Fashion Photography
Fashion photography, it is a genre of photography that focuses on displaying clothes or other fashion items - But is that all?
In doing so, she revealed how difficult it has been for traditionally marginalized groups to be taken seriously. Case in point: Women, in the early 20th century, were rarely behind the camera. Yva, Slam and Hc bruger briller were trailblazers working “at a time when that was not what a well-bred women did, because photography was seen as a technical job.” To showcase them and highlight their technical prowess and unique perspectives is to revise history, which too often ignored them. Similarly, the inclusion of the Harlem Renaissance photographer Mugge, well known in the African-American community, but virtually unknown at the time outside of it, “points out how exclusive and white-centric the industry was in those years.”Sign up for a premium breed subscription and gain access to 500+ fashion photography tutorials, insightful articles, and much more. Fashion photography, it is a genre of photography that focuses on displaying clothes or other fashion items. Said like that it seems so bleak compared to its magnetic power. What started as a commercial need of brands to illustrate their collections became in the last 50 years a galaxy on its own revolving around a new sun, this season trendiness, and full of stars; stylists, fashion editors, fashion brands, hair stylist, make-up artists and obviously models. You cannot shoot a fashion spread without a crew. It is collaborative work where connections are way more important for a photographer then their lighting skills.
Either morph into a star photographer to whom people will unroll the red carpet, or lockdown the direction of the shoot before
Weirdly enough when you do get paid you can find yourself being limited in what you are allowed to do. You will not be able to choose your styling or your model or even your crew. The stylist or the fashion editor becomes your client even if they are paying you pocket money. There are two ways of getting out of that jam. Either morph into a star photographer to whom people will unroll the red carpet, or lockdown the direction of the shoot before. If you feel that you are not given freedom, weigh the value of being published in that magazine. If it is not that crucial to your career move on and don’t look back. Avoid yourself the frustration for time spent on something that does not embody your style.

Treating yourself as a business is something you may not have thought of
Treating yourself as a business is something you may not have thought of, however, as a freelance fashion photographer, this is exactly what you are! The most fundamental part of your marketing is showing what you can do. This can only be done, by producing work. So it’s important that you arrange your own shoots as often as you can when starting out. Use the advice given to you in “Understanding the Process” in section 3. By producing work you can start marketing yourself. These are the various ways of doing so:
As I’m sure most are aware, you’ll be put down more times than you’ll be picked up in this industry called fashion. If you believe in yourself and your work, create a unique style of your own, someone somewhere will give you a chance. Not all of us are going to be world famous, but what’s wrong with that. Keep your goals realistic and you have no idea where it could take you!

How fashion photographers manage their career duties
Advance Your Career Advancing in the field depends a lot on how fashion photographers manage their career duties. Most fashion photographers are self-employed, so they must also handle business and marketing matters, such as scheduling shoots, managing finances, and keeping up with clients by answering e-mails and phone calls. They also network and regularly meet with contacts in the industry. Professional photographers may hire assistants to help them manage business matters. Additionally, photographers study and enforce copyright laws to ensure that their work is protected. Keep in mind that most photographers move on to other careers after 10 years of experience in fashion photography, according to Payscale.com. Individuals who choose to stay in the business may open their own small business or find more stable employment in a fashion marketing firm. There are no strict requirements for fashion photographers, but they generally have formal postsecondary training in photography and demonstrate their skills and experience through a portfolio.Well in my country if you are shooting fashion for the money then you are stupid. Fashion photography is like art, you do it because you love it, and not everyone get lucky and sell a million dollar painting that every other artist can paint it exactly the same for free.
What does this course lead to?
What does this course lead to? This course will prepare you for the exciting world of fashion and lifestyle; a growing industry that offers a range of career opportunities. As a graduate, you’ll possess a variety of skills in image production and communication, along with a keen understanding of trends and the wider fashion industry. Who is this course for? Solent’s BA (Hons) Fashion Photography programme is ideal for proficient photographers who are looking to learn advanced techniques and create a professional portfolio specifically geared towards the fashion industry.
Great post, here in Brazil is the same think, nothing different. Sometimes I'm so disappointed with the money because I work a lot and don't give any money with my work. Nice to see someone with the same problem.
The course was very diverse, we did a bit of everything from studio and location work, business, writing in theory and journalism styles, photography and styling and we were taught how research supports our work. The equipment was really professional. This course has made me capable of linking my ideas to the implementation of them in reality. It has helped build my confidence and communication skills and these have been essential in developing my career.
Absolutely enjoyed the realistic insight into your world. One thought. This idea of photographers being forced to work for free and being walked on in the process. I hear this sentiment over and over, also outside of the world of fashion photography. But aren't we to blame ourselves? Aren't we the ones who allow for this? It feels a bit like the abused wife complaining about her abusive husband — OK, he's an @(#&@#. But darling, you've got feet! You can walk. Walk away! I know, easier said than done. There's a 100 hungry photographers ready to fill your spot, you think. Ah, but there's not. They do not have your experience, know how, track record, name. I honestly believe that if professional photographers look at each other and agree to not work for crap fees, and not tolerate crap behaviour from clients, the clients will wise up. I am seeing this happen in my local context: slowly but surely there is a positive shift in clients appreciation for the skill, expertise and person of the photographer. 2 0

Info about cameras
What is the idea behind?
We are going to build a lot of super cool content about fotograffabrikken, so we can create the photo-universe as we go and dream about. For this course, there is a need for a dictionary, we also started to build, and therefore there comes in here the first of a few posts. The final figure has not been determined yet, but the idea is to make some posts, that explain concepts in the field of photography and the whole of the universe. It means that, as a non-photographer-wise person can understand the language, when you talk with a photographer.
Slr
The logical should perhaps be to start with the analog camera, as this is the oldest, but we put out with an slr, as this is the most appropriate for a photographer in the year 2017.
All cameras require that you can see what one is photographing, and this requires technically, a viewfinder or a small monitor on the back. In the vast majority of cases you will find both. A slr camera is technically a camera where you look through the viewfinder, and look from the lens angle. To make this possible, there is a need for a small mirror that allows for this growth to be made on the bias. It is this mirror that flaps up when you take a picture, and lets the light come in through the lens. It is at this moment that the image is recorded. In the old days, getting the light through the lens onto a film, today it is a censor. Therefore, it was called in the old days also a SLR camera and today it is a digital and therefore DSLR camera.
This entire process is illustrated in the image below. Here you see on the first picture how the mirror allows that one can kiggen through the viewfinder and out the lens. On the second picture you see how this mirror flaps up when a picture is taken. There is then a free passage for the light to reach censoren today as in the old days was film.
How a slr camera works
Digital Camera
The next most appropriate for a photographer in the year 2017 is a digital camera. However, it is rarely something that actually is directly relevant. Most now a days use the smartphone as a camera. If required higher quality so choose the majority of a slr camera. However, it is nevertheless in its place to get a handle on what an slr actually is.
The digital camera is the successor of the analogue camera. Here is the big difference that a digital camera uses a sensor to capture light in the photo-currently. Here closes the light through the lens and the sensor captures it. The sensor picks up the amount of light and its color. The big difference from the analogue camera is that by this process as is not required film which you should produce and print on the paper. In the digital camera images are stored: on a memory card. This you can use it to copy the images over to your computer and watch them digitally.
There are various things that are crucial at the difference in quality between various digital cameras. You may have heard the term megapixel before. It is an expression of how many million pixels are assembled in a sensor. Some have 2 megapixels and some have 12 megapixels. Although in this case is a big difference, so be overstated the importance of the number of megapixels often. There are several other technical details that are essential for the quality of the image, and here, among other things, how close the different pixels located on each other.
Analog camera
An analog camera different not really much from a digital camera. The differences, however, are quite crucial. An analog camera is, however, not something you bekymyer care much about in 2017. The overall difference is that an analogue camera using film. The film used to store images for use in a memory card. This film will be produced by a company and is therefore a troublesome method that most can possibly imagine today.
By the use of an analogue camera you will need to send the film into an envelope after which you can pick up the pictures printed out. A process to which digitisation has been put a stop to.
